BANNISTER DOWNS DAIRY
Northcliffe, WA
Product Packaging & Promo
Bannister Downs was just starting out on their own way back in 2001 when they employed me to create their new look. They’ve grown to become WA’s leading boutique dairy, taking out gold for their milk products in nearly every award they enter throughout Australia!
Once I’d created their logo (drawn in charcoal and converted to line art), their stationery and basic farm signage followed.
Bannister Downs’ initial products were a beautiful collection of vintage cheeses and yoghurts. These required product packaging and cartons, and featuring photos in sepia, complimented with gold embellishment, and black backgrounds to fit with their historic farming family background. Various promotional items including html websites, flyers, and newspaper advertising followed, and then they moved into the milk market and took on the big milk producers.
Sue had discovered Ecolean’s chalk-based packaging and gained the sole right to use in the Southern Hemisphere. I worked with her to design the original Farm Fresh and All Lite milk packaging. The feature cow on the cover was named “Heather” as a shout out to me. The colouring lightened for a fresher feel and many of the adverts, Christmas cards and trucks started to come alive with my dancing cow illustrations with their blue daisies!
Then came the decadent Double Cream jar labels. Their pouch range was extended to include Fresh Cream plus three delicious flavoured milks, and the pale blue ribbon logo entered the scene.
Retro Betty’s Choc Cherry and Spearmint Blitz glass product labels were a surprise for Sue’s Mum’s wedding anniversary. I illustrated the picture of “Betty” from one of her mum’s wedding photos and matched it with the 50s retro style. The Non-Homogenised Milk glass bottles were created at the same time featuring a calf with the same markings as “Heather”.
Recent jobs have included Christmas calendars for part-owner, Gina Rinehart’s companies: Hancock Agriculture and S. Kidman & Co, designed in a similar style to the BDD calendars.
I completed a refresh of all the pouch packaging in mid-2020, along with the various sized pouches for each product. This packaging went on to win the 2020 Winner of Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA).
I’m in the process of creating their new truck billboards featuring their latest product designs, and watch in delight as the business grows even more successful every year!
